Is Credit Repair Worth It? The FCRA Says No
Credit-repair companies charge monthly fees to exercise a legal right that already belongs to you - for free. Here's what they actually do, what they legally can't, and why a proper FCRA dispute is stronger than anything you can buy.
Type “fix my credit” into a search engine and you will meet an industry built on a single trick: charging you a monthly fee to exercise a right Congress already gave you for free. The Fair Credit Reporting Act lets any consumer dispute any inaccurate item on any credit report - no company, subscription, or “credit expert” required.
This page answers the question honestly: what does credit repair actually do, what can it never do, and what is the alternative the credit-repair industry hopes you never learn about?
The industry’s biggest name was ordered to pay $2.7 billion
In 2024, a federal court ordered Progrexion - parent of Lexington Law and CreditRepair.com - to pay $2.7 billion for illegal advance-fee practices, after a CFPB lawsuit under the Credit Repair Organizations Act. That is not a fringe operator; that was the largest credit-repair firm in the country.

- Can: send dispute letters to the bureaus on your behalf. That is the entire product.
- Cannot:remove accurate, timely negative information. Nobody can - the FTC says so explicitly. A company promising to “delete” real late payments is proposing to file false disputes in your name.
- Cannot: sue a bureau or furnisher that verifies a false item. Only you - with an FCRA attorney - can do that. And that lawsuit is where the real leverage lives.
- Cannot:do anything faster than you can. The bureau’s 30-day reinvestigation clock is identical whether the letter comes from you or a firm billing you monthly.

Credit repair vs. an FCRA dispute, side by side
| Paid credit repair | Your free FCRA dispute | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to you | $50–$150+ per month, often for a year or more | Free. A dispute letter costs a stamp; FCRA attorneys work on contingency with fee-shifting |
| Who has the legal right | The company exercises YOUR right on your behalf - it has no rights of its own | You. FCRA § 611 gives the dispute right to the consumer personally |
| What gets sent | Templated form letters the bureaus recognize and often reject as "frivolous" | A specific, factual letter in your own voice - the kind the FCRA was written for |
| Accurate negative items | Cannot legally be removed - by anyone, ever | Same. Anyone who promises otherwise is describing fraud |
| When the bureau refuses | The company sends another form letter - and bills you another month | The refusal becomes evidence. A wrongly "verified" error is the basis of an FCRA lawsuit |
| Legal leverage | None. Credit-repair firms cannot sue for you | Actual damages, statutory damages, punitive damages, and the defendant pays your attorneys’ fees |

A specific, factual dispute letter in your own words is the one thing credit-repair firms cannot write for you - and our generator builds it at no cost.
The part credit repair never tells you: disputes are step one, not the whole game
The FCRA’s dispute process is not just a correction mechanism - it is the legal foundation for accountability. When you dispute through a bureau by certified mail and the bureau “verifies” a real error anyway, that failure triggers your private right to sue under FCRA § 616 and § 617: actual damages (denied credit, higher rates, time, emotional distress), statutory and punitive damages for willful violations, and - crucially - the defendant pays your attorneys’ fees. That fee-shifting is why FCRA attorneys take meritorious cases at no cost to the consumer.
A credit-repair company’s templated letter often destroys this foundation: vague or factually wrong dispute language gets rejected as frivolous, and a dispute you did not write can undermine your credibility in court. Curious what accountability actually looks like? See what an FCRA case is worth.

The free playbook
- 1Pull your free reports from all three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com (free weekly).
- 2Identify each specific inaccuracy - account, what the report says, why it’s wrong.
- 3Send a specific, factual dispute letter to each bureau by certified mail, return receipt requested. Our free generator writes it for you.
- 4Keep everything. If the bureau verifies the error or ignores you, that paper trail is an FCRA case - and the consultation is free.
Bottom line
Credit repair sells you a watered-down version of a right you already own. The FCRA gives you the dispute for free, and gives you a courtroom - with the defendant paying your lawyer - when the dispute is ignored. No monthly subscription offers either.
