Deceased Reporting

You're alive. Your credit report disagrees. Here's how to prove it.

What this is

A "deceased indicator" on your credit report β€” placed there by the Social Security Administration, a creditor, or a bureau error β€” can freeze all your credit activity. Lenders see it and deny every application. This error is surprisingly common and can persist for years if not formally disputed.

Why it hurts your credit

Every credit application you submit is automatically denied. Credit cards are canceled. Bank accounts may be frozen. The error compounds: as creditors close accounts based on the deceased flag, your available credit drops and your utilization spikes. It's one of the most disruptive possible credit errors.

Act quickly. The longer the deceased flag stays, the more accounts close and the more damage compounds. Dispute to all three bureaus simultaneously by certified mail.

How this error happens

The Social Security Administration transmits death data to the credit bureaus. If SSA receives incorrect information from a hospital, a funeral home, or through a name/SSN confusion, the "death master file" gets your record. Once a bureau receives the flag, it marks your file accordingly. The same error can also be triggered by a joint account holder's death or a mixed-file situation with a deceased person.

What your dispute letter needs

Your letter must clearly state that you are alive and submitting this dispute yourself. Attach strong proof of your current, active existence: a recent bank statement in your name, a utility bill, a government ID with a current address. Ask the bureau to remove the deceased indicator and confirm in writing.

Contacting SSA directly

If the flag originated from the SSA death master file, you may also need to visit a Social Security Administration office in person with photo ID to request correction of their records. The bureau should also remove it upon your dispute, but correcting the SSA record prevents it from recurring.

Your key rights

  • Bureau must reinvestigate and correct the deceased indicator within 30 days
  • You may request the bureau add a consumer statement explaining the error
  • Bureau must notify any recipients of your report in the prior 2 years of the correction
  • Persistent refusal to correct a clearly living consumer's file may support a willful FCRA claim
