Inaccurate Payment History or Balance
You paid on time. The report disagrees. Here's how to fix it.
What this is
An inaccurate payment dispute challenges a specific piece of data that the furnisher (bank, lender, credit card company) reported to the bureau incorrectly β a late payment that was actually on time, a balance that's wrong, a credit limit that's understated, or an account status that doesn't reflect reality.
Why it hurts your credit
A single 30-day late payment mark can drop your score 60β110 points. A wrong high balance inflates your utilization ratio and further suppresses your score. These errors can mean higher interest rates, denied loans, and more expensive insurance.
How these errors happen
Furnishers submit data to bureaus in bulk monthly files. Coding errors, system migrations, payment posting delays, and misapplied payments all produce inaccurate tradeline data. Creditors are legally required to report accurately, but errors are common and the correction process often requires a formal dispute.
What a dispute letter needs to say
Your letter must identify the account by name and last-4 digits, state precisely what the report shows and why it's wrong, reference FCRA Β§ 611 (30-day reinvestigation), and attach proof β a bank statement, payment receipt, or account screenshot showing the correct date or balance.
Sending it the right way
Send by certified mail, return receipt requested β to each bureau reporting the error. This is the critical step: the bureau-routed dispute is what triggers the furnisher's reinvestigation duty under FCRA Β§ 1681s-2(b) and preserves your private FCRA claim against the furnisher. As a supplemental measure, you may also send a direct letter to the furnisher asking it to correct its records β but a direct furnisher dispute alone, without first disputing through a bureau, does not create a private right of action under Β§ 1681s-2(a). Keep every certified-mail confirmation. If the dispute is ignored or returned "verified" without a real investigation, that paper trail is your evidence for an FCRA lawsuit.
Your key rights
- Bureau must complete reinvestigation within 30 days (45 days if you submitted new info)
- Bureau must forward your dispute and evidence to the furnisher
- Furnisher must investigate and report corrections back to all bureaus
- You are entitled to a free copy of your updated report after a correction
- FCRA violations entitle you to actual damages β lost credit, damaged reputation, time wasted, emotional distress β plus punitive damages; the losing defendant pays your attorneys' fees. Results depend on the facts of each case.
